D11 and small angle neutron scattering: a paradigm of ILL - by John White

This open-access article published in The European Physical Journal E  highlights the success of D11 as an integral part of the wider achievements of ILL over half a decade.

It was written by John White, the first UK director of the ILL (1977–1980).

Professor John White was a key figure in the international scattering community for more than five decades. Over the course of a long and distinguished career his work demonstrated how neutron scattering data could be analysed to provide precise details of molecular structure and dynamics for a wide variety of chemical systems. He began his neutron scattering career in Europe in the 1960s where the most exciting developments were taking place at the time. He became director of the Institut Laue-Langevin , where he proposed and led the “deuxième souffle” renewal program from 1978. This manuscript was submitted in July 2023 and received very positive feedback from the reviewers, who were of the opinion that it represented an appropriate introduction to the special issue for the celebration of the 50 years of the instrument D11, and only minor corrections were requested. Sadly, Prof. White passed this summer before seeing the comments of the referees.
