PANTHER

Thermal neutron time-of-flight spectrometer

Panther - Thermal neutron time-of-flight spectrometer

Panther is a high-flux medium-resolution thermal-neutron direct-geometry time-of-flight spectrometer optimized for energy transfers in the range 2-60 meV. It is designed for inelastic neutron-scattering measurements of excitations in condensed matter using single crystals, polycrystalline samples, and liquids. It is currently using unpolarized neutrons.

Panther resumed operation in December 2023. Accepted proposals from the October 2022 round will preferentially be scheduled in the first cycle of 2024 and those from the April 2023 round in the second cycle of 2024. Because of the important backlog, the instrument will not be available in the next proposal round (with deadline 25 January 2024).

Applications

  • Crystal field excitations, spin-waves in magnetically ordered materials, magnetic excitations in quantum and/or frustrated magnets.
  • Lattice dynamics: phonon dispersion and phonon density of states.
  • Vibrational spectroscopy in the lower energy range.
  • Quantum rotations/translations of small molecules in confinements.
