Collaborations & Partnerships

The ILL is “the” European Neutron Source. It is involved in many different partnerships and collaborations and provides assistance for innovative development on the industrial market.

BUSINESS COLLABORATIONS

OHB SYSTEM & MT AEROSPACE

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) have teamed up with leading European aerospace companies OHB System AG  and MT Aerospace AG  on a number of industrial challenges.  Together, their capacity to probe matter with x-rays and neutrons has boosted the companies' efforts to characterise hi-tech materials and improved the efficiency of manufacturing processes.

PROCTER & GAMBLE

The multinational corporation Procter & Gamble has signed a Master Collaboration Agreement on a strategic research partnership with the ILL and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The signature sets up a collaboration framework for P&G, giving it access to the two institutes' advanced facilities and skills.

LOCAL COLLABORATIONS

PAC-G Grenoble

The Institute Laue-Langevin is one of the members of the Grenoble Platform for Advanced Characterisation (PAC-G) which offers advanced characterisation services for innovation in micro- and nano-electronics. The Platform is part of the "Nanoelec" Technological Research Institute.

Irradiation des composants : le centre de compétences (video 6 mn, français)

The ILL is one of the European large-scale facilities contributing to the Grenoble Innovation for Advanced New Technologies project.GIANT is a partnership of eight institutions working on the creation of a world-leading campus for research, higher education, and the transfer of technology to industry.

NeXT-Grenoble The Neutron and X-ray Tomography in Grenoble project emerged in 2016 from collaboration between the ILL and the Université Grenoble Alpes, combining the ILL's state-of-the-art resources with those of the UGA's 3SR laboratory, a leading center in the experimental investigation of porous media and geomaterials.

The main goal of this project is to exploit the uniquely powerful neutron flux produced by the ILL and the high complementarity of x-rays and neutrons to build a novel imaging instrument for material science research.

The Partnership for Structural Biology (PSB) was established by a Memorandum of Understanding in 2002 by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) and the Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS) to provide a unique environment for state-of-the-art integrated structural biology.

The Partnership for Soft Condensed Matter is a scientific and technical platform supporting ambitious large-scale soft matter research projects related to  nanomaterials, environmental and energy sciences, biotechnology and related fields.

EUROPEAN UNION INITIATIVES

InnovaXN This is a joint ILL-ESRF project. With funding by the Marie Słodowska Curie COFUND programme, InnovaXN will provide 40 fully-funded PhD studentships working on pre-competitive research projects driven by an industrial partner. There will be two recruitment waves, with one group of 20 students starting in September 2020 and and a second in September 2021.

FILL2030 is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The aim of FILL2030 is to develop a new financially resilient business model for the ILL, extending its supply of outstanding services to the neutron user community beyond 2030.

The League of advanced European Neutron Sources (LENS) is a not-for-profit consortium formed to promote collaboration between European neutron infrastructure providers on strategies for neutron science, innovation in the use of neutrons, training for neutron users, and the development of neutron technologies.

EARIV, the European Analytical Research Infrastructures Village

The ILL is one of the 41 Analytical Research Infrastructures belonging to this joint initiative led by five European H2020 projects and three Regional projects. The aim of the initiative is to highlight the potential of neutrons for industry.

EARIV has released a brochure illustrating the capabilities of European analytical research infrastructures for industrial R&D. Second-to-none worldwide, the European research infrastructure portfolio provides material characterisation facilities going far beyond those available in labs; almost all of them are open to industrial partners.

SINE2020 (Science and Innovation with Neutrons in Europe in 2020) was a consortium of 18 institutions from 12 countries working to strengthen cooperation between neutron facilities and European industry, SINE2020’s Industry consultancy initiative offers free feasibility studies to companies.

PARTNER INSTITUTES

The ESRF, our sister institute on the site, provides similar research services for industry with high-intensity x-ray beams. X-rays can provide complementary information to neutron-based experiments.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), a multi-disciplinary research facility currently building the world’s most powerful neutron source.

The ESS and ILL are fully committed to combining their forces in the interests of science, the neutron user community, and their stakeholders. Their aim is to reinforce Europe’s leading position in neutron research and technology by optimising the use of the resources available for neutron research.
