The ILL Science Strategy, providing a detailed roadmap for the next decade, was presented in 2025 and is now taking shape in reality. April is being a pivotal month, with the launch of the Neutron Battery Hub and of the Applied Science Instrument group.

ILL welcomed a delegation of the Atomic Energy Agency and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Discussions focused on international cooperation in neutron science and on building a long-term scientific partnership.

The ILL concluded 2025 operations at the end of October. In total, more than 1800 scientists came on site to perform close to 1400 experiments. The High-Flux Reactor will restart in late March 2026 for a year with 3 operating cycles in the programme.

It was a pleasure to be part of the 2025 edition of 'Parvis des Sciences', with the theme 'Inteligence(s)', held at Minatec in Grenoble.

The ILL strengthens its research capabilities by modernising two key instruments (D11 and NeXT-MoTo) to address major challenges in health, energy transition and sustainable technologies. Supported by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region and the European Union, this project represents a €1.8 million investment under the CPER EPN 2030 (State-Region Plan Contract).

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi for their ‘development of metal organic frameworks’ (MOFs), is of particular relevance to neutron science and the ILL.

The latest ‘Spotlight’ meeting of the Partnership in Structural Biology (PSB) brought together researchers from across the EPN campus and beyond for a morning of engaging presentations and discussions dedicated to liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS). The ensemble of the contributions highlighted the relevance of LLPS across diverse contexts, in particular in addressing some of humankind’s core challenges related to health, disease and the environment.

After a week in Jülich, the school moved to the ILL for a week of hands-on training. The participants had access to 24 world-class instruments out of ILL’s suite of over 40. The course took place during the second ILL reactor cycle of 2025.

The International Conference on Neutron Scattering 2025 was held in Copenhagen and Lund on 6-10 July. The ILL had a strong presence, with 66 participants, oral presentations, posters, many interesting discussions and some prizes.

The ILL Science Strategy outlines the approach to leverage on the extensive instrument and facility upgrades. Elaborated in collaboration with external experts, it provides a vision for scientific operation for the coming decade.

ITM Isotope Technologies Munich SE (ITM) and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), today announced an extension of their collaboration for medical radioisotope production, originally established in 2009.
