Interaction of intelligent drug delivery vehicles with model biomembranes

Monolayers mimicking the EEM and LEM membranes will be used to determine the nature and time course of their interaction with the 4 types of delivery vehicles (namely lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles and nanoemulsions) will be studied using a variety of techniques including a Langmuir trough, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), ellipsometry and neutron reflectivity, in combination with contrast variation. In particular whether or not the delivery vehicles are adsorbed to the surface of the model endosomal membranes, and/or if the molecules comprising the vehicle exchange with those of the monolayer, and whether or not the interactions vary with the composition of the model endosomal membrane. The results of the study will be used to aid in the design of improved delivery systems to target the desired intracellular site of action.
