The ILL concluded 2025 operations at the end of October. In total, more than 1800 scientists came on site to perform close to 1400 experiments. The High-Flux Reactor will restart in late March 2026 for a year with 3 operating cycles in the programme.

As part of the Polish Scientific Member partnership, the ILL welcomed ten students and two supervisors from Poland for an intensive week-long training designed to introduce them to the world of neutron scattering.

A former PhD student at the ILL and Birmingham University has been awarded this year’s prize for her “ground-breaking contributions to the study of frustrated magnets using neutron polarisation analysis combined with novel data analysis methodologies, and especially her discovery of a spiral spin liquid phase in LiYbO2.”

Visualisation of the Ising-like spin liquid on the triangular spin lattice realised in NdTa7O19. The spins (arrows) show antiferromagnetic correlations between nearest neighbours (glowing bonds) but remain fluctuating down to the lowest experimental temperature A r…

The publication made the front cover of Nature Physics in May 2020.

The diffuse scattering measured from Yb₂Ti₂O₇ at 50 mK using polarised neutrons on D7 at the ILL. All the features are due to magnetism in the sample. This is a characteristic pattern from a Quantum Spin Liquid, stabilised by th…
