PANTHER

Thermal neutron time-of-flight spectrometer

Panther - Thermal neutron time-of-flight spectrometer

Panther is a high-flux medium-resolution thermal-neutron direct-geometry time-of-flight spectrometer optimized for energy transfers in the range 2-60 meV. It is designed for inelastic neutron-scattering measurements of excitations in condensed matter using single crystals, polycrystalline samples, and liquids. It is currently using unpolarized neutrons.

Because of problems with its Fermi chopper, Panther is not available in the current cycle (August/September 2023) and not open for proposal submission for the 15 September 2023 round.

Applications

  • Crystal field excitations, spin-waves in magnetically ordered materials, magnetic excitations in quantum and/or frustrated magnets.
  • Lattice dynamics: phonon dispersion and phonon density of states.
  • Vibrational spectroscopy in the lower energy range.
  • Quantum rotations/translations of small molecules in confinements.
