Extending the capacity and capability for neutron macromolecular crystallography

DALI - A QUASI-LAUE DIFFRACTOMETER FOR BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES

DALI is the second quasi-Laue neutron diffractometer at ILL (with LADI-III) used for single-crystal studies of biological macromolecules at high resolution (1.5 - 2.5Å). The suite of protein crystal diffractomer allows to visualize key hydrogens or deuterium atoms within biological macromolecules. It helps identifying the protonation states of charged residues, the exact hydrogen-bonds network of a bound small molecule or an inhibitor, or to determine the orientation of water molecules, some being involved in catalytic mechanisms. 

Data collection is feasible for samples with unit-cell edges ranging from 50 to 150Å using crystal volumes from ~0.05 to 0.5mm3, respectively
