If today we are the world leader in neutron science, it is thanks to the approx. 500 staff members - students and scientists, technicians and administrators pulling together.

The institute was created in 1967 at the initiative of France and Germany. The United Kingdom soon became the third Associate and 10 other European countries joined as Scientific Members.

The ILL is therefore a genuinely international operation, working in three official languages, French, German and English.
