The BOBINE project: preparing the future in neutron science and technology

This project gathers 3 ESFRI-landmark facilities (ILL, EMFL, ESS) and comprises research infrastructures (RIs), research laboratories and companies from 10 countries with the aim to answer the growing demand for high magnetic fields and very low temperatures at neutron facilities, by building and commissioning user magnets that will place European research at an unparalleled level to tackle scientific and societal challenges:

• High-repetition rate 40 T pulsed-field cryomagnets capable of cooling samples to the temperatures required by quantum spin systems and allowing for a much better exploitation of the beamtime,
• A 20 T steady-state cryomagnet built from second generation high-Tc superconducting tapes and cooling samples to mK temperatures that is less dependent on the worldwide helium shortage than conventional low-Tc magnets.

In addition, thanks to the safe and proven design of the 20 T magnet, BOBINE will also enable EU industries to become global suppliers of custom high-Tc magnets for decades to come, providing the EU with a springboard for RIs and industrial competitiveness.
