Leszek Ropelewski awarded ILL's Anton Oed Prize

28 Oct 2024

The Anton Oed Prize honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs). The 2024 prize has been awarded to Leszek Ropelewski (CERN).

The award ceremony was held in a public event organised during MPGD 2024, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Georges Charpak’s birth. The event was transmitted via Zoom (and attended remotely by the laureate). The Georges Charpak Prizes, rewarding the best oral and poster contributions by young physicists were also given during the ceremony.

At the end of the 1980s, Anton Oed first introduced MicroStrip Gas Chambers to detect neutrons at the ILL. This led to the development of the highly successful MicroPattern Gas Detectors - MPGDs - which brought decisive improvements to detector technology.

With this prize, the ILL honours his memory, whilst encouraging the development of detector techniques for scientific applications. Recipients are awarded €1,000 by the ILL, along with a plaque bearing their name.
