Regine Willumeit-Römer has been appointed Director of the ILL for a five-year term starting in October 2026. She holds a PhD in physics (1996) from the University of Hamburg for her research on the structural characterisation of ribosomes using spin-dependent small-angle neutron scattering. In 2002, she completed her Habilitation in biochemistry, also at the University of Hamburg.

For the last two decades, her research has focused on biomaterials, with a strong emphasis on degradable metallic implants, bridging fundamental research with innovative applications that benefit both academia and industry. Since January 2015, she has served as Director of the Institute for Metallic Biomaterials at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, alongside her appointment as Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Kiel (since October 2014). From October 2024 to December 2025, she was also Acting Scientific Director of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon.
