PorTo
Description
PorTo is a cold neutron tomography instrument optimized for high-resolution imaging across a broad range of scientific applications. Its configuration supports both neutron radiography and tomography, with a maximum field of view of up to 80 × 80 mm².
The instrument is well suited for high-resolution studies of static samples as well as operando and in-situ experiments, accommodating laboratory-scale setups.
Applications
- Material science and Engineering
- Energy science and battery studies
- Additive manufacturing and metallurgy
- Earth and planetary Sciences
- Fluid flow and percolation
- Porous media research
- Food science
Instrument layout
PorTo exploits the full intensity of the polychromatic neutron beam delivered by the H113 guide. A virtual source located 10 m upstream, combined with a set of interchangeable pinhole elements, allows collimation ratios ranging from 333 to 4000. The beam is further conditioned by a series of diaphragms along the vacuum flight tube upstream of the sample.
The imaging station is equipped with a high-precision rotation table to enable tomographic acquisition. Downstream of the sample, an indirect detector assembly records transmission images using neutron attenuation contrast.
