In an article published in ACS Macro Letters, a team of physicochemists describes a novel approach which uses neutron and light scattering to monitor in situ the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers in near-equilibrium conditions. These results offer a wealth of possibilities for observing and better understanding the organisation of complex biological and synthetic macromolecules in aqu…

BIG-MAP's Advanced Characterisation Work Package (WP5) is responsible for the creation of a European multi-modal, multi-technique platform enabling the investigation of standardised and novel batteries, using coordinated, state-of-the-art experimental techniques both in laboratories and at large-scale facilities (using X-rays and Neutrons). In this context, the ILL, ESRF and CEA recently organised…

Though continuous down-scaling in microelectronics has enabled the industry to achieve phenomenal success, the trend is now approaching fundamental limits. Promising alternative technologies for next generation devices exploit not only the charge of the electron – as used in conventional microelectronics – but also the electron spin (spintronics) or spin waves (magnonics) in order to transmit, st…

The serum protein ApoE is known to bind to LNPs after administration and to be critical for cellular uptake and protein production in the liver. The acquisition of complementary SANS and SAXS data revealed the structural and compositional effects induced by this binding: a rearrangement of both t…

Anthracyclines are widely used and highly effective chemotherapy drugs, clinically used to treat various types of cancer. Powerful characterisation techniques were combined by researchers from the University of Manchester, University of Warsaw and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in order to bette…

Polymers – macromolecules composed of repeating subunits called monomers – are everywhere. Proteins, DNA, starch and cellulose are all examples of naturally occurring polymers, while synthetic polymer materials – considered one of the most important inventions of modern times – are involved in mos…
