The Science of Neutron Imaging Today. New Scientific Opportunities through Advanced Neutron Imaging.

From 08/10/2019 to 08/10/2019

General ILL Seminar
Organised by College I
Tuesday, 8 October 2019 at 11:00
Seminar room 7/8, ILL 1

Prof. Dr. Markus Strobl
Laboratory for Neutron Imaging and Scattering (LNS) - Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - Villigen Switzerland
Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) - University of Copenhagen - Copenhagen - Denmark

Neutron imaging has a long history which for many decades was dominated by applications in non-destructive testing, starting shortly after the discovery of the neutron. However, the new millennium saw a swift development of neutron imaging into a much-requested research tool in a wide range of applications and in particular in material science alongside established neutron scattering techniques.

Ground breaking developments have been achieved for both basic requirements in imaging, namely resolution and contrast. The former are mainly driven by technological advances and the latter by methodical ones. Hence, an insight shall be provided in the state of the art enabled by technology as well as instrumentation advancements and such exploiting novel contrast mechanisms. Together these transformations enable completely new science cases in neutron imaging today, but also extend and improve the potential in conventional and industrial applications.

Thus, in particular the novel scientific capabilities and opportunities shall be introduced and an overview will be provided alongside a number of outstanding and proto-typical investigations and approaches, which also further drive rapid progress in the field.
