“Recent Discoveries and Measurements around Zirconium-88 Thermal Neutron Absorption

Dr. Will Flanagan University of Texas at Austin and University of Dallas

Scientists at LLNL discovered in 2019 that the thermal neutron absorption cross section of zirconium-88 was roughly 800,000 barns when 10 barns was expected. This has set off a flurry of activity and interest in the nuclear community. Teams at LANL and CERN n_TOF have both measured the responsible resonance using two different methods, transmission and capture, respectively. This talk will describe the CERN n_TOF direct capture measurement in August and September 2024 as well as a measurement of the metastable state of zirconium-89 formed after zirconium-88 neutron absorption at the University of Texas NETL reactor in April 2024.
