"Statistical gamma decay of highly excited nuclear states"

Milan Krtička Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Czech Republic, milan.krticka@matfyz.cuni.cz

Experimental information on individual nuclear levels is usually available only for levels with the lowest excitation energies (typically up to about 0.5-2 MeV for medium-weight and heavy nuclei). However, in practice, we need to be able to describe gamma decay of levels with higher excitation energies, particularly in nuclear astrophysics, where increasingly heavier nuclei are produced by neutron capture in stars. A way how we describe this decay will be briefly outlined, along with examples of several experimental methods — mainly based on radiative neutron capture — that aid in our understanding of this process.
