Ken Andersen

Ken Andersen has been Director of the ILL since October 2023. 

He holds a PhD in physics from the University of Keele in the UK and ILL (1991). His research interests are centred the design and optimisation of neutron instruments for both steady-state and pulsed neutron sources.

Ken Andersen was the Associate Laboratory Director for Neutron Sciences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2021-2023), overseeing the operation and management of two neutron facilities: the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor. Prior to this, he was director for the Neutron Technologies Division within the Neutron Sciences Directorate (2020-2021). 

Between 2010 and 2019, Ken Andersen was head of the Neutron Instruments Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden. 

Before that, he led the Neutron Optics lab at the ILL and worked as an instrument scientist at both ILL and ISIS in the UK, also spending a brief period as a post-doc at the KENS neutron facility in Japan.
