“ Measurements surrounding the isomers of xenon-135

Dr. Will Flanagan University of Texas at Austin and University of Dallas

It has been known that xenon-135 abundances within nuclear fuel dominate reactivity since the B Reactor reached criticality at the Hanford site in September 1944. Nonetheless, improved nuclear data is needed for xenon-135 and xenon-135m with the advent of molten salt reactors and digital twin simulations of current reactors. This talk will provide measurements taken in July 2025 at the University of Texas at Austin Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory TRIGA reactor on the isomeric yield ratio of xenon-134 thermal neutron capture as well as the thermal neutron cross section of xenon-135m. This talk will also describe futures plans to measure the prompt gammas of xenon-135, two energy resolved measurements of the xenon-135 neutron capture cross section, and fabrication of a cesium-135 target based on xenon-135 production.
