Radioprotection and your samples
Registering and recovering your samples
All samples put in a neutron beam have the potential to become radioactive. They must be checked and cleared by the Radioprotection service before they can leave the controlled areas.
Samples measured during an experiment must be declared and will be issued a QR identification code.
Here's how to declare your samples during your experiment, and how to recover your samples post-experiment.
The Declaration Station
The Declaration Station is on the ground floor near the main ILL office building (ILL4) by the entries to the experimental areas of ILL5 (reactor building) and the guide halls (ILL7/22).
It is beside the main Radioprotection Office.
It has the computer used to declare samples and create their QR codes.
A cupboard below the Station has a selection of plastic containers for samples whose containers are too small for the QR sticker, and for batches of samples with the same QR code.
The ILL7/22 Verification station
The ILL7/22 Verification Station is in the controlled area, just by the exit to the experimental areas in the guide hall.
It hosts the equipment and computer used to verify the samples. These are only for the use of ILL Radioprotection Agents.
It has two cupboards:
- The Sample Drop Off cupboard, where samples are left for verification
- The Sample Pick-Up cupboard, to recover samples that have been verified
It has a refrigerator for temperature-sensitive samples. There are marked shelves inside the refrigerator
- The Sample Drop Off shelves, where samples are left for verification
- The Sample Pick-Up shelves, to recover samples that have been verified
The ILL5 Verification station
The ILL5 Verification Station is in the controlled area, just by the exit to the experimental areas from the reactor building.
It hosts the equipment and computer used to verify the samples. These are only for the use of ILL Radioprotection Agents.
It has two cupboards:
- The Sample Drop Off cupboard, where samples are left for verification
- The Sample Pick-Up cupboard, to recover samples that have been verified
