Management structure

The Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is the governing body of the ILL. Representing the Associate Countries, it establishes the general operational and investment strategies and takes the important policy decisions concerning the future. The Steering Committee meets twice a year (in June and December). The representatives of some of the the Scientific Member countries participate as observers.

The Scientific Council

The Scientific Council advises the ILL Management Board on scientific matters, in particular in what concerns scientific priorities and the development of the infrastructure in the interest of the user programme. It also assesses the scientific output of the facility. The Scientific Council is composed of representatives of the Associate and the Scientific Member countries and meets twice a year.  The chairs of the subcommittees are also invited to join these meetings.

The Scientific Council reports back to the Steering Committee, our governing body,  which has the ultimate responsibility for determining operational and investment strategies for the Institute.

The Subcommittee of the Steering Committee on Administrative Questions (SAQ) monitors the administrative operations and makes recommendations to the Steering Committee. It may also, on its own initiative, advise the Steering Committee on administrative matters which should be reviewed.

The Management Board

The ILL Management Board is chaired by the ILL Director and ensures the efficient operation of the facility, in particular the collaboration and communication between the Divisions. It advises the Director on the main issues affecting the ILL, this includes but not limited to, the annual and multiannual scientific and instrumental programme, associated technology, and reactor operation schedule, staff development, major collaborations and contracts with third parties, financial aspects (annual budget and multiannual estimates), and preparation of the Steering Committee.
