7.1 The EMBL
To understand what led the EMBO create a laboratory in Grenoble at the ILL, we must go back to November 6, 1970. At that time the “Scientific advisory commitee” of the British government during a two-day visit to Grenoble, came to the ILL. I have already mentioned this visit in describing the events that led to
the British becoming partners in the ILL. I return to this now because the committee had among its members Sir John Kendrew (1917-1997), an eminent structural biologist who received
