IN8

Thermal neutron three-axis spectrometer

IN8 is optimized for inelastic measurements with an energy transfer in the range of a few meV to about one-hundred meV. Typical examples are the magnetic excitations in high-temperature superconductors, low-dimensional magnets and Spin-Peierls systems. Because of its high-flux it is well suited for small sample volumes and systems with weak magnet moments. The instrument is also used for the investigations of lattice vibrations and excitations in liquids.

FlatCone maps of inelastic response in relaxor-like ferroelectric perovskites

Cubic perovskites with mixed B-site occupancy like PMN (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3), PZN (PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3) or even more complicated mixtures, are attractive for industrial applications by their anomalously high values of dielectric permitivities. The short-range disorder in their crystalline lattices, at the origin of their interesting properties, leads to anomalies in phonon spectra and gives rise to additional inelastic diffuse scattering.
