IN20

Thermal neutron three-axis spectrometer with polarization analysis

Simulated TAS experiment

The animation shows the principle of a neutron inelastic scattering experiment with IN20 by means of the classical three axis spectrometry (TAS).

  • The polychromatic beam from the thermal beam tube H13 arrives at the monochromator.
  • The monochromatic diffracted beam is scattered by the sample, usually a single crystal, a liquid or an amorphous material.
  • The analyser measures the energy of the scattered beam.
  • The scan shown here is an energy scan in which the energy of the incident beam changes at each step (constant final energy mode).

This kind of experiment makes it possible to better understand the lattice or spin dynamics of the sample.
