D20

High-intensity two-axis diffractometer with variable resolution

Neutron scattering on undercooled metallic melts

This movie was shot on D20 in october 2000. The target of this experiment was diffraction studies of supercooled melts of metals or metal alloys. Here the sample is a nickel sphere levitated magnetically inside an induction furnace in a high vacuum. This setup avoids all risks of chemical contamination by the walls of a crucible or by an external heating element.
