Information about the ILL Graduate School (IGS)

About 54 students are currently preparing their PhD thesis at the ILL. The topics of these PhDs cover every possible type of research with neutrons.

A thesis at the ILL is always organised in cooperation with a university that awards the PhD diploma. Students usually spend two to three years at the ILL and the remainder of the time at their home university in the group of their academic supervisor.  Each PhD student also has an ILL supervisor whose duties and responsibilities are described here.

If you would like to apply for a thesis at the ILL, take a look at our PhD Programme.

The selection process of proposed PhD projects is represented graphically here, and in more detailed notes here.

Within the ILL, PhD students are represented on the Science and Colleges Committee (SCC) by two representatives. If you are a student and have any issues you would like to raise with the college secretaries or the Director of the Science Division (Mark Johnson), you should contact the PhD representatives. The PhD reps are elected for a term of one year. In 2017, the General Assembly of PhD students at ILL passed a bylaws document, which details the duties and responsibilities of the representatives.

In order to ensure fruitful and pleasant working conditions for PhD students within the ILL scientific community, as well as to manage effectively the administrative and pedagogical tasks for the PhD student body, Dr. Henry Fischer was appointed Head of the ILL Graduate School (IGS) on 14 September 2017 for a period of 3 years (see Director's note 2017/09), succeeding Dr. Hannu Mutka who served as IGS Head for about 10 years. The official description of the role of the Head of the IGS can be found here.

You can also download the note of Prof. Helmut Schober and Dr. Hannu Mutka describing the Role and procedures of the ILL graduate school as well as the Position paper of the ILL Science Division.
