ThALES - Three Axis Low Energy Spectrometer

ThALES is the replacement for IN14. It implements the results of technical progress of the last two decades and has been fully optimized to address present scientific problems especially in the field of quantum magnetism and the physics of highly correlated electron systems.


The main aims of this next generation cold neutron three-axis spectrometer are:

  • to increase the overall data collection rate (new neutron optics, multiplexing of the analyser–detector system)
  • to provide an efficient and easy-to-use polarized neutron option,
  • to extend the incident neutron range towards higher energies bridging the gap with thermal instruments
  • to be able to use high-field magnets—such as the currently available 15 T cryomagnet, without restrictions of the kinematical range.
