Study of macromolecular systems using the wide range of technology platforms available in the Partnership for Structural Biology, including neutron and X-ray diffraction.

The group was originally created with funding from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and has since attracted support from numerous sources including awards under FP5, FP6, FP7, and FP8 (Horizon 2020), multinational sources such as PROTEA and national funding agencies such as ANRT.

It currently operates a programme for macromolecular crystallogenesis under FP8. Most recently it has been awarded a major prestigious award from the Human Frontier Science Programme (HFSP) for highly interdisciplinary transnational work on filamentous molecules (eg amyloid, DNA, nucleoprotein complexes, nanotubes).

The group has close links with the faculty of Natural Sciences at Keele University (UK) with whom it shares a lecturer joint appointee and several secondee & honorary staff) and over the years has registered numerous postdoctoral staff and PhD students – typically through external joint funding.

Many of its in-house research activities are collaborative with members of the international user community; essentially all of these involve close cooperation with the ESRF Structural  Biology Group and the Business Development Unit. In collaboration with ESRF, substantial amounts of funding have been provided by industry (eg GlaxoSmithKline, Novo Nordisk) for student support.
