D007

Diffuse Scattering Spectrometer

D7 has been dismantled.  The new permanently-polarized diffuse scattering spectrometer D007 will deliver its first neutrons in 2024.

Diffuse Magnetic Scattering in β-Mn

Magnetic frustration can lead to the suppression of magnetic order and adoption of unusual short-range correlated ground states. An excellent example of this is the transition metal allotrope β-Mn, the ground state of which has been debated for decades. Thanks to recent single crystal neutron scattering studies on D7, however, an understanding now appears to be emerging. Using the XYZ polarization analysis technique, the magnetic cross section was unambiguously separated from the remainder of the scattering; reciprocal space maps in four different scattering planes are shown in the top left quadrants of the figure. These were then fitted using a state-of-the-art Reverse Monte Carlo technique (top right quadrants). On the basis of the real space spin arrangement extracted from the simulations, an accurate microscopic model of β-Mn could finally be constructed (bottom right quadrants).
