Optics

We provide neutron optical components for optimising neutron instruments. From monochromator and analyser crystals to converging guides, bandpass filters and polarising 3He spin-filters and supermirror devices, the ILL neutron optics lab provides the know-how and the in-house manufacturing capabilities. We develop and produce the neutron optical components required to maintain the leading role of the ILL in neutron scattering.

Magneto-static cavities

Magneto-static cavities

Maintaining good polarisation of the spin-filter cell requires a very homogeneous magnetic field both during transport from Tyrex and on the neutron instrument itself. The ILL now provides a wide range of high-homogeneity magneto-static cavities, specialised in providing different degrees of transportability, cell volume and shielding from external fields.

Permanent magnet Magic boxes have been developed for the transportation of cell from the Tyrex filling station to the ILL neutron instruments. Magnetic relaxation time is typically between 100h and 500h.
