* LD : Limit of detection.
 ** Activated carbon cartridges are used to trap any iodine in gaseous form (gaseous iodine is not retained by the paper filters). As cartridges sample a lower volume of air in 24 hours than paper filters, they have a higher detection limit.
 *** In order to optimise detection, this value for Caesium 137 is obtained by simultaneously measuring the 4 filters in the 4 Grenoble field stations.
**** As of 18 April 2011 the figures correspond to average weekly data.

The Institut Laue-Langevin runs 4 environmental monitoring field stations and a specialised laboratory. Each of the outstations are equipped with 3 types of instrument taking measurements in real time of:

  • Ambient dose rates
  • Volume activity of the air in gas
  • Volume activity of the air in aerosols (solid particles)

 

The outstations are also equipped with other air sampling devices which our technicians regularly remove for more detailed analysis in the laboratory; these include paper filters to analyse aerosols, active carbon cartridges to analyse halogens, and a bubbling system for tritium detection. The laboratory also takes field samples at regular intervals from the environment surrounding the Institute. [Further information.]
