Instruments & Support

While the ILL's neutron source has remained essentially unchanged during the lifetime of the Institute, the ILL's instruments and their components have been continually developed and improved to increase their effectiveness.

More than simply neutrons

The newly opened Carl-Ivar Bränden Building - CIBB.
The Carl-Ivär-Branden building, host to the Partnership for Structural Biology.

In order to maintain their position on the international scene European research institutes are optimising their resources and developing synergies at every level.

The ILL - in collaboration with other institutes - is actively responding to the needs of scientists unfamiliar with neutron techniques and in need of training and support facilities.

New support facilities have been already set up on the ILL site. These include the Partnership for Structural Biology (PSB), with a specialised deuteration laboratory for biological samples (D-Lab), and the Materials Science Support Laboratory.

Two more partnerships are to be built, the Partnership for Soft Condensed Matter (PSCM) and the Partnership for High Magnetic Fields.
