The Time-of-flight and High-Resolution Group

The Time-of-flight and High-Resolution (TOF-HR) group of the ILL operates three distinct kinds of instruments that measure the atomic, molecular and crystal motions of samples in powder, glass or liquid form.

The TOF-HR instruments

The instruments of the TOF/HR group are aimed at studying the dynamics in condensed matter samples, either in the form of powders, glasses or liquids. They are divided in three classes: the Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrometers (IN4, IN5, IN6), the backscattering spectrometers (IN10, IN13, IN16) and the spin-echo spectrometers (IN11, IN15). In addition, there is a diffuse scattering instrument, with polarisation analysis (D7), which has also a TOF option.

Time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometers

  • IN4 thermal neutron TOF spectrometer
  • IN5 cold neutron multi-chopper TOF spectrometer
  • IN6 cold neutron time-focussing TOF spectrometer
  • BRISP Brillouin Spectrometer (CRG)

High-resolution spectrometers

  • IN10 backscattering spectrometer
  • IN11 spin-echo spectrometer
  • IN13 backscattering spectrometer (CRG)
  • IN15 spin-echo spectrometer
  • IN16 backscattering spectrometer
