On 2 April, a press release was issued by Greenpeace and reported in a number of newspapers,...

On 2 April, a press release was issued by Greenpeace and reported in a number of newspapers, stating that a cargo of uranium for delivery to the ILL was about to be shipped across the Atlantic under dubious safety conditions.

Although the ILL does indeed procure its uranium from the United States, both the dates and the conditions of the transport operation are clearly incorrect. For obvious security reasons, the ILL does not make public its fuel’s itinerary.

It should be remembered that the ILL is a research institute which uses the neutrons produced by its reactor for scientific research covering a broad range of application areas, including the design of clean fuels and engines, biological processes and the electronic devices of tomorrow.
The level of enrichment of the uranium used provides the ILL with the most intense neutron source in the world, making the Institute an undisputed leader in its field.

For further information, please do not hesitate to
.

ILL scientific data policy

Central facilities for neutron scattering and synchrotron X-rays in Europe are working together...

Central facilities for neutron scattering and synchrotron X-rays in Europe are working together increasingly to develop and share infrastructure for the data collected there. Such co-operation should make it easier and more efficient for users to access and process their data, and provide more secure means of storage and retrieval. It should also increase the scientific value of the data by opening it up to a wider community for further analysis and fostering new collaborations between scientific groups. Ultimately this should improve the quality and quantity of publications from such data. However, with these developments comes a need to define how such data and any associated metadata are stored and made accessible, and for this a common data policy has been established to provide a suitable working framework.

The Scientific Council encouraged the ILL to implement a data policy in its meeting in April 2010 to better define, manage and exploit this valuable resource. This proposal was refined through discussion with ILL scientists over the following year, taking into account a number of concerns about possible improper use. For example there will be an embargo period of 3 years that can be extended in a light-touch fashion when there is good reason not to allow it to go public. The Scientific Council congratulated ILL in its meeting of November 2011 for recognising so effectively its responsibility towards the data generated through its experimental programme.

The <media 53287 _top - "ILL_data_management_policy_Nov_2011.pdf (80 KB)">complete document</media> describing the ILL data policy can be found <media 53287 _top - "ILL_data_management_policy_Nov_2011.pdf (80 KB)">here</media>.

The new ILL data policy will be applied from 2012 onwards, starting with those proposals accepted at the next proposal round (deadline 15 February 2012).

New management team at Institut Laue-Langevin see European collaboration as key to scientific advance

The Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble has appointed a new senior management team as it prepares to...

The Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble has appointed a new senior management team as it prepares to mark 40 years of experiments at the cutting edge of neutron science.
Prof. Andrew Harrison, formerly Science Director has been appointed Director General, with Helmut Schober taking the role of Science Director and Jose-Luis Martinez continuing as Director of Projects and Techniques.

The new team have signalled their intention to maintain and grow the neutron user community by collaborating with current and prospective neutron sources throughout Europe and the world. A key step in this direction has been the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding with the European Spallation Source, planned to be built in Lund, Sweden..

“I feel very privileged to become Director General of the world’s flagship centre for neutron science,” says Andrew Harrison “we have been given a huge boost over the past decade through our instrument renewal plan, and we have many of the world’s best neutron scientists and engineers. We’re poised for real progress in key problems such as high-temperature super conductors and membranes in biological systems and we will continue to find creative ways of enabling this progression. However we will make the most progress in developing new techniques and instrumentation by working with other neutron institutes on the challenges that face us all.”

The ILL received over 700 proposals for beam time in the last round and serves a community of over 4500 European scientists. New Science Director Helmut Schober believes that the number can grow still more “We will work hard to widen the use of neutron scattering by engaging with communities in biology, earth and environmental science who might not fully exploit the technique.
“We have to strike a balance between maintaining dominance in areas such as the magnetic properties of materials whilst at the same time introducing our techniques to casual users who may not be hardcore physicists.”

Jose Luis Martinez, who remains as the Director of Projects and Technique Division believes that ILL will also increase its community in the applied sciences. “Fundamental research will always be the cornerstone of what we do at ILL but as we grow our user base, there is likely to be greater use of our techniques for industrial applications.”

The new team are in post as of 1st October.

During fission the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts, producing free neutrons, it is the same process as used in nuclear power generation but at a lower temperature. Neutron moderators cool the neutrons to useful wavelengths, which are then directed at a suite of instruments and used to probe the structure and behaviour of matter.

The institute was founded by France and Germany in 1967 with the United Kingdom becoming the third major partner in 1973.Ten more countries have since become partners.

A modernisation programme was launched in 2000, through the design of new neutron infrastructure and the introduction of new instruments. A second phase of development began in 2008 to build five new instruments and upgrade four others.

Scientists of institutions in the member states may apply to use the ILL facilities, and may invite scientists from other countries to participate. Experimental time is allocated by a scientific council of ILL users. The use of the facility and travel costs for researchers are paid for by the institute. Commercial use, for which a fee is charged, is not subject to the scientific council review process.
Over 750 experiments are completed every year, in areas including:
• Magnetism
• Superconductivity
• Materials engineering
• Liquids and colloids
• Biological substances

Today, 26th September, the
and the ILL initiate an extensive collaboration for research and development activities within neutron science.

In a Memorandum of Understanding agreed on today, ILL and
set the framework for the future cooperation, which aims at developing joint scientific and technological projects. The ESS will be a world-leading centre for materials research with neutrons and will host the world’s most powerful neutron source. The ILL is an international research centre operating the most intense steady neutron source in the world, and has been the world-leading centre for neutron science and the development of neutron instrument technology for more than 40 years, generating scientific output of high quality.

"It is a great moment when ESS and ILL now will join forces. As a former Director of ILL, I am particularly pleased. I am convinced that ESS and ILL will be able to drive neutron science forward together, and strengthen European science overall," says Colin Carlile, ESS Director-General.
This collaboration will also allow ESS as a European project to take benefit from ILL’s leading role in neutron science. The scientific collaboration will cover joint development of neutron scattering instrumentation, beam-line components and neutron optics, as well as development of detector technologies. It will also include joint hosting and organizing of scientific and technical meetings involving the science community.

"I am convinced that the future extensive collaboration between ILL and ESS will be a major step towards maintaining the pre-eminent role of Europe in neutron science well beyond 2020, and helping to meet the grand challenges of our society, "explains Richard Wagner, director of the ILL.

Having worked at neutron scattering centres all around the world (ANL, BNL, CEA-Grenoble, CNRL, ISIS, LLB, ORNL, Risø ... and the ILL of course), Gerry must be the international community's most itinerant neutron scatterer!

The European Neutron Scattering Association's selection committee cited Gerry's "many ground-breaking scientific achievements mostly in the field of the magnetism of the actinides and his outstanding contributions to the development of neutron sources".

Gerry was a pioneer in the development and exploitation of pulsed neutron sources. He has had a visionary impact on neutron sources and instrumentationworld-wide, not only through his experimental skills, but by his persistent commitment to high-efficiency innovative techniques.
He was also the Founding Editor of Neutron News, the newspaper keeping the neutron scattering community informed on developments throughout the world. Last but not least, he had made a massive contribution to the education of thesis students and post-doctoral fellows, through multiple summer schools and post-graduate seminars. Gerry has acted as mentor to generations of neutron scatterers!
ILL sends its warmest congratulations to Gerry Lander.
