SANE - Services for Advanced Neutron Environment

We provide cryomagnets generating fields up to 7T horizontally and 15T vertically. Two new cryomagnets will soon be available. They will both feature a helium recondensing system reducing the boil-off.

Code Information

We identify our equipment for simplifying its maintenance and managing its movements inside the institute. We use a code that informs quickly about the main specifications. For cryomagnets, here is the way we define the code:

  • the leading two or three digits denotes internal ILL order number. This number is incremented each time a new device is made available.
  • the first and second letters denote the code of the manufacturer as follows:
  • IL: ILL Cryostat
  • OX: Oxford Instruments
  • TH: Thor
  • AP: Air Products
  • ED: Edwards
  • The following letters denote the code of the refrigerant mode:
  • H: 4He
  • F: with furnace option (T > 320K)
  • N: Nitrogen
  • V: gas flow
  • 3H: 3He
  • CC: closed cycle refrigerator
  • CF: cryofurnace
  • DIL: dilution refrigerator
  • GI: gas injection
  • JT: with Joule Thomson third stage
  • The last digits indicate the maximum sample diameter in mm.

For example, the cryomagnet 158OXHV28 is the 158th cryostat introduced at the ILL. It is designed and built by the company Oxford Instruments (code OX), uses a gas flow of liquid helium (code HV) and provides Ø28 mm access to the sample in the variable temperature insert.
