The inspection on 15 February 2007 followed on the declaration of a significant event on 2 February 2007, concerning the malfunctioning of iodine filters on the (principal and backup) gaseous effluents circuit in the reactor building of the Institute. The problem had been observed by the ILL's health physics service, when carrying out investigations into the progressive increase in iodine emissions over the previous weeks. The iodine emissions remained well below authorised limits.
The inspectors remarked on the reactivity the Institute had shown in carrying out its investigations. This inspection revealed the need for the operator to take steps to improve its awareness of the state of availability of the different components in the circuit in question. ILL is now required to carry out further tests proving it is better equipped to determine the state of availability of the iodine filters.
