The inspection of 11 June 2008 examined the arrangements made at ILL to guarantee proper safety management. The inspection comprised a number of personal interviews with staff responsible for the safety of the installation and an examination of the different documents forming the basis of safety management at ILL. Five interviews were held during the day-long inspection. They involved one of the two Assistant Directors and four members of the Reactor Division staff responsible for operational safety. The inspectors examined some of the official notes issued by the ILL directors, to check that management practices corresponded with the theory, and that they were satisfactory.
At the end of the inspection the inspectors concluded that the Reactor Division's procedures for managing reactor safety were being efficiently implemented. They nevertheless noted that they had not been able to obtain a clear view of the allocation of responsibilities within the Institute and its general policy on safety management. They recommended that ILL clearly define the duties of the head of the Reactor Division, his position in the management structure, and the resources available to him for guaranteeing the safe operation of the reactor. No significant observation was made as a result of the inspection.
