Inspection of 11 August 2008 - Transport of radioactive materials

The inspection of 11 August 2008 focused on the transport of radioactive materials, and in particular on the quality assurance programmes covering the movement of radioactive materials and the work of the security adviser.
The inspectors sought to ensure that the activities associated with the transport of radioactive materials are performed in accordance with written procedures and comply with regulatory requirements. They focused on the official procedures to be followed, the checks to be carried out on the transport operations, and on the processing of the safety-related data. They also requested checks on the radiological cleanliness of a convoy of spent fuel elements leaving the site.
The inspectors noted that the ILL's quality assurance programme for the activities related to the transport of radioactive materials was satisfactory. They also considered that there was a need to add to the information in the security adviser's annual report. The radiological cleanliness checks found no traces of contamination beyond the permissible limits.
This inspection raised no significant issues. Requests were made for additional information.
