There are a number of computers that are available to you as a visitor to instrument D19. Two of these are located in the instrument area - you have to be familiar with their operation in order to execute you experiment and evaluate your data. Their details are summarised below :
Computer name | Network name | Machine type | Function | Rebooting procedure |
d19 | d19.ill.fr | DEC alpha | Data acquisition using MAD | Click here |
d19sgi | d19sgi.ill.fr | Silicon Graphics Octane | Data reduction & analysis | Click here |
As soon as you arrive, you should set yourself up on each of these computers as follows:
D19 (DEC alpha)
Log in as d19 (usually not necessary since user d19 is rarely logged off) and then create a new sub-directory with your family name as name in lower case letter. All of your data acquisition work should be done here (remember that Unix differentiates between lower and upper case: best never to use capital letters unless required)
e.g.
mkdir posel
cd posel
you are now in /users/d19/posel
Run MAD and edit all files needed for MAD, in this area. Don't work in the main area /users/d19 unless necessary. User log files are found in /users/d19/LOG_FILE. Read them, but do not changeor delete them !
N.B.: use ctrl-c not ctrl-z to stop most programs - this minimises detached jobs. However, do not use ctrl-c to stop mad - it may crash the computer - use pcp.
D19SGI (Silicon Graphics)
Login as d19. You will then be forced to work in a sub-directory - again use your family name
e.g.
posel
you are now in /tmp_mnt/home/vis/d19/posel
Run all data reduction & analysis software from here (e.g. for single crystal experiments, programs such as prewash, index, euler, retreat, models, rafd19, etc).
