The Computing for Science (CS) group supports ILL scientists, students and visitors in a number of activities including data analysis, instrument simulation and sample simulation.

Virtual Experiments - Inserting samples in instrument simulationsOne may use results from the sample simulations to model sample behaviour in an instrument simulation. We then obtain a computer model of a whole 'virtual' experiment. Currently, McStas is shipped with virtual experiment examples, but we also have advanced instrument descriptions for some ILL instruments.
An other approach is to control a virtual experiment just as a real instrument. This principle was demonstrated with the Light interrface for the IN6 spectrometer. Eventhough this project is now obsoleted by the new NOMAD instrument control software from the ILL/DPT/SCI instrument control group, the IDL source code is available as some ideas and bits may be used elsewhere.
A web portal will be made available end of 2007 for the users to simulate some of their experiments/proposals (with liquids, powders, a few crystals diffraction, colloids, ...) - except with polarized neutrons.
As an example, we have designed a short movie showing how a McStas simulation is assembled, and what kind of results it gives.
