ILL offers jobs in a wide range of fields. Altogether, more than 50 different professions contribute to the operation of the most intense neutron source in the world.
The three main components of the ILL’s workforce are scientific staff, technical support staff and administrative support staff.
Research
“Science” is the ILL’s core business with programmes in physics, chemistry and biology, neutron science and technology, materials science, scientific computing, magnetism and instrumentation.
The ILL’s research scientists assist the world’s leading experts in pushing back the frontiers of modern science. Through their publications, they make their own contribution to scientific developments in the above disciplines. They pursue their own research programmes and are responsible for assisting visiting scientists with their experiments. At the same time they are closely involved in the operation and development of the experimental instruments.
Technical support
Specialists in mechanics and electronics, applied physics, instrumentation, neutron optics, cryogenics, health and safety and computing provide the essential support services required by ILL’s researchers. Engineers and technicians are responsible for the ongoing optimisation of the ILL’s instrumentation, while their efforts within the framework of the Millennium Programme of instrument renewal help to ensure that the ILL remains at the forefront of science and technology.
The supporting facilities also depend on a wide range of experts. Reactor and safety specialists work around the clock, 7 days a week, to ensure that the high-intensity neutron flux delivered to the instruments remains safe and reliable. They are also responsible for maintaining the neutron source to the highest operational standards and guaranteeing its compliance with the most rigorous of safety requirements.
Administrative support
Administrative support at the ILL is provided by staff with expertise in human resources management, finance, accounting, law, purchasing, and public relations.
The international environment at the ILL requires its staff to combine technical know-how with a high degree of intercultural awareness and knowledge of at least two of the Institute’s three official languages (English, French and German). They are committed to ensuring service of the highest quality to partners from both within and outside the Institute.
