Experiments and instruments

A series of short movies showing how neutron experiments are prepared or performed. Some of these movies have an historical interest since they captured important moments in the life of the ILL.

IN20

With Spin Echo option (TASSE)

IN20 is a thermal beam three-axis spectrometer equipped for inelastic scattering experiments with 1D and 3D (CRYOPAD) polarisation analysis, and for excitation line-width studies using the thermal beam spin-echo technique (TASSE).

The short movies below where shot in 2002 during the experiment (4-01-530): "Neutron spin-echo study of phonon line-widths and energies in Ge and Si".
This is a typical experiment where adding the TASSE option on IN20 is invaluable. The neutron spin-echo technique dramatically improves the energy resolution  compared to the conventional TAS setup.

From back to foreground you can see :

- the monochromator housing of IN20,
- the primary superconducting coil vessel (TASSE),
- the sample cryostat (orange),
- the secondary superconducting coil vessel with its cryogenic device (TASSE),
- the analyser shielding,
- the neutron detector (lower right corner).
