D10

A neutron 4-circle diffractometer equiped with a dilution cryostat with helium circulation

The neutron diffractometer D10 is a four circle diffractometer with optional energy analysis as on three axis spectrometers.
It also includes a unique four circle dilution cryostat capable of cooling a crytal sample to 65 mK. This functions independently of gravity, and allows the crystal within to be fully orientable in the beam with a range of complex rotationsThe techniques used is similar to that now used on cryostats carried on high-altitude balloons and satellites.

The video below was recorder in 2001. It first shows the installation of a sample in the dilution cryostat of D10 and then the movements of the diffractometer and the cold stage of the cryostat.

The second movie is a neutron radiograph film recorded at the ILL in 2005 on NEUTROGRAPH. It shows the progressive dilution of helium-3 into helium-4 inside a capillary which is at the heart of ultra-low temperature space cryostats. These observations in situ is possible only using neutrons where there is a marked isotopic effect for helium (helium-4 is transparent, helium-3 is opaque to neutrons).
